Several hours later, the commanders had been dismissed and Indraat was alone, composing missives to her subordinates still in orbit or patrolling the sector. A soft knock preceded the form of her religious officer. She beckoned him forward, and he closed the door quietly behind him. He stood in front of her desk, waiting.
She finished the message she was encoding and said “Yes?”
“Several humans have been captured, Squadron-Captain. They were hiding in what passes for a luxury dwelling in this place.”
“Why are they still alive?”
“I didn’t execute them because only two soldiers know of their existence. They immediately informed me, and I’m now immediately informing you.”
Raanja gestured toward the chair, and she nodded. He sat, arranged his robes, then continued, “While I understand that there are tactical reasons to take no prisoners, I believe we could achieve a greater understanding of these creatures by transporting them back to the cathedral. As you no doubt know, we have many individuals who are well-trained in the extraction of secrets from those willing or unwilling to share them.”
Indraat nodded with a frown.
“I absolutely do not intend to usurp your authority in any way, Squadron-Captain. If you wish it, I will eliminate them myself. It simply seems as if this is a unique opportunity.”
Indraat thought for a moment and realized that he was correct. “Can we trust the secrecy of the soldiers?”
“I took the precaution of requiring them to stay with the prisoners and to remain out of communication. While we cannot be completely certain, it is highly likely.”
She nodded again. “Your plan is a good one. Contact the Jade Breeze and inform its captain that he now has a special mission. Once he delivers his troops, he will return these prisoners to our homeworld.” She tapped a nail against the desk. “Find something in which to hide them for the transit. A crate of some kind. I’m sure the Jade Breeze can provide one. Also, the soldiers will accompany the humans.”
The man rose and bowed in assent, then made his way to the door.
“Raanja?”
Her religious officer turned in response to her address. “Yes, Squadron-Captain?”
“Inform Captain Dreela that if at any time she doubts the ability of our soldiers to keep this secret, she is to kill them herself.”
“As you command.”
He exited, closing the door behind him. Indraat returned to her work.
